There are quite a number of interesting satellite towns and cities around Milan (which is why Milan is so important) and interesting districts too like the Lake District, beautiful and unique in Italy, with 5 major lakes and numerous minor ones just as beautiful - and on Milan's northern side towards the lakes and mountains are the very visitable cities of Monza and Bergamo. Finding someone with a period of 5 days to a week in Milan would be rarer but staying well over a week in Milan is no problem (or at least in this nearby region) if you also use it as a very logical base for numerous day trips - or with your total length of time, you could also choose to stay at any of those destinations within "day trip distance". Since Milan is a major port of entry and huge transport hub, quite a number of people (as you may already have seen in other posts on this forum) are on their way elsewhere and just spend half a day looking around Milan.
